Integrated physical and behavioral health care
We are changing how we pay for the delivery of physical health, behavioral health, and substance use disorder (SUD) services in the Apple Health (Medicaid) program.
What is integrated physical and behavioral health?
Through this whole-person approach to care, a person's physical and behavioral health needs are addressed in one system through an integrated network of providers. We call this integrated managed care (IMC).
Before IMC, people with a behavioral health condition and substance use disorder had to navigate three separate systems to access the services they needed to stay healthy. The physical health, behavioral health, and SUD delivery systems often didn’t communicate about a person's care, which led to duplication of services, poorly coordinated care, lower health outcomes, and a frustrating experience for patients and providers.
See the regional resources page for additional materials about IMC.
