Apple Health Expansion enrollment update

Applications for individuals age 19-64

The enrollment limit for Apple Health Expansion has been met for individuals age 19 – 64. If you have not applied, you can still complete your application for Apple Health Expansion to be considered if space opens in the program.

If you applied for coverage and were denied because the cap was met, there are no additional steps you need to take. There is still a possibility you may be randomly selected to enroll if space opens in the program. You will receive an eligibility notice if you are selected for enrollment.

Applications for individuals age 65 and older are still being accepted

The enrollment limit for Apple Health Expansion has not been met for individuals age 65 and older. You may apply online at Washington Connection or call 1-877-501-2233 to request a paper application. The Apple Health Expansion program does not have a resource or asset test.

Monthly release of Apple Health (Medicaid) renewal data

As shared in the June 30 press release, the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA), in partnership with the Washington Health Benefit Exchange (Exchange), and the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), released Apple Health (Medicaid) renewal data monthly.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple Health clients did not need to provide renewal information to maintain their health care coverage. With the ending of the public health emergency (PHE), federal law required states to resume eligibility verification over the course of the year.

The unwind from the PHE in Washington State ended with individuals due for renewal April 30, 2024. Almost 2 million Washington State residents continue to be covered by Apple Health. The state engaged in extensive outreach efforts to make sure Apple Health clients updated their eligibility information to avoid losing coverage they might still be eligible for.

April 2024 data highlights

Total Monthly renewals processed: 141,728
Total number of disenrollments: 53,392
- Disenrolled for not responding: 28,261

May through July 2023 had a large number of disenrollments consistent with expectations. Disenrollment numbers decreased through April 2024. This likely means that many people who needed Apple Health during the pandemic have regained employer-sponsored insurance, found coverage through Washington Healthplanfinder, or now qualify for Medicare.
